Japanese baby names

The name Japanese individuals have in Japan are often very different from names in English speaking countries. Those names Japan recognizes are usually a family name first and then the given name second. Often the name Japanese individuals change isn’t actually a change, see changing your name
they just switch the names so that their given name is first and their family name is second like in most English names. The name Japanese people are called when around family and friends is their given name, and among the Japanese it’s known that the first name is the family name and the second name is the given name.

The name Japanese children are given is usually tied to it’s meaning. Unlike many people in the United States, the meaning of the names the Japanese give to their children are known to the parents. Names such as Kiyoko, which means clean child, or Kiyoshi meaning purity, and Misaki meaning beauty bloom.

Traditionally, female names end in the suffix "-ko", meaning child or "-mi", meaning beauty, though many parents are beginning to move away from such traditions. Japanese names present a wide range of possibilities for parents wishing to grant their child a name that sets them apart.
