Every year the popular names lists do not change very much there are
slight changes and lists change slowly over a number of years. But every year there
are always a few new baby names which appear out of nowhere.

These names usually
appear due to an event or occasion and people associate their new baby name with
a name associated with the event.
These are some of the new baby names which appeared over the years in
our popular names lists.
In 2004 there were seven first time entries to the top 100 for boys: Charles, Christian,
Hugh, Noah, Odhran, Rian and Tomas. Also, Lorcan and Owen returned to the
top 100 after a year’s absence. The highest new entry was Noah, which rose from
213th place in 1999 and 132nd last year to reach 79th place. The names rising the
most places were Odhran (up 56 places to 100) and Noah (up 53 places to 79).
In 2003 there were eight new entries to the top 100 for boys: Cameron, Colin, Daire,
Emmanuel, Karl, Max, Reece and Ruairi.
The highest new entry was Colin and the highest climber was Kian which rose from
268th place in 1998 to 65th place in 2003. First time entries to the top 100 are Ruairi,
Emmanuel and Max.
In 2002 there were six new entries to the top 100 for boys: Charlie, Connor, Denis,
Eric, Seamus and Steven. Eric and Steven returned to the top 100 after missing out last
year. Seamus and Connor also returned to the top 100 after being absent since 1998.
There were nine new names in the top 100 for girls: Ailbhe, Eabha, Heather, Isabel,
Isabelle, Laoise, Lara, Nadine and Sadhbh. Lara returned to the top 100 after missing
out last year. Heather and Nadine also returned to the top 100 having been absent since
1998.
These new names are usually inspired by famous individuals you did something
special in that or a previous year, e.g. a sports star who performed well,
an actor who starred ina popular film, somebody famous who choose an unusual
baby name.
